Ireland Will Participate in Eurovision 2022

They last won in 1997, and they are also the country with the most wins.

Ireland will compete in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022, which will be held in Italy, according to Irish broadcaster RTÉ. Although the broadcaster has not yet confirmed Ireland's selection method for next year, the country's Head of Delegation has previously hinted at a return to a national final.

The news of Ireland's participation was confirmed to ESCToday as the list of contestants for next year's competition continues to grow. Following the 2021 competition in May, Ireland's Head of Delegation, Michael Kealy, hinted in an interview with The Irish Sun that the Irish public may have a say in Ireland's selection for Italy.

He stated that he "feels it's time we reverted to giving the public a say in what we do, but we must find an effective and cost-effective way to do so." Ireland's last national final was held in 2015 to determine their entry. Lesley Roy, who was previously chosen to represent Ireland at Eurovision 2020, will be back in Rotterdam this year to represent the seven-time winner country. In 2020, her song was the upbeat, bubblegum pop-inspired entry "Story of My Life," which was scheduled to be performed seventh in the first semi-final.

Lesley returned to the stage a year later, performing in slot number 7 in the first semi-final with "Maps." Despite its popularity among Twitter fans prior to the contest, Ireland did not advance to the semi-finals. The song received only 20 points and thus finished last.
