Olivia Rodrigo says that fame can really be tough on one’s mental health

The budding star reflects on the cost of fame

Who can believe that it was just this May ths year that  Olivia Rodrigo released her debut album, SOUR. In an interview with Vogue Singapore, Olivia Rodrigo reflects on her journey from a young Disney star to a teenage pop sensation.

The singer shared that she manages her fame with the help of her solid support system. She said that they keep her grounded and that they veer her away from any bad media attention.

Olivia said that she is taking it one step at a time. “It can be really tough on your mental health, though. I’m grateful for the people who like me for me, and keep me separated from all the noise and tabloids or what people are saying about me on social media. That’s always been a top priority," Rodrigo told the interviewer.

"It’s funny how recognition changes everything and also changes nothing in your life. The problems I was having a year ago are still the problems I’m having now, and things that brought me joy a year ago are still the things that bring me joy now. It’s just another aspect of life that you need to learn how to deal with, but it doesn’t change who you are as a person." This statement shows Olivia Rodrigo’s maturity and that she has a good head on her shoulders.

Olivia also expresses how her fame helped her see who her real friends are and who will always have her back. She said that it was surprising to see who has genuine support for her and who doesn't. Some people get intimidated by the sudden success and feel different about you. Olivia says that she is figuring it all out still.

To give a bit of a context, Olivia also shared about her childhood. She said that in middle school she started to be homeschooled and working on sets, which is an unusual aspect of her upbringing. She said that she was lucky that she has friends and family who keep her accountable and help her stay grounded.

One aspect that really helped her deal with everything that is happening is the stability of her parents. Olivia explained "My parents take all this craziness in the best way. They always say, 'We are so proud of you and all these achievements are incredible, but we would be equally proud of you if you were in school in your hometown,'" Rodrigo said. "They’re the best and that’s a really important attitude to have."

The musings and reflections of this rising superstar can be seen on the latest copy of Vogue Singapore, that the singer proudly posted on her Instagram page.
