Portugal Joins Eurovision 2022

Festival da Canção 2022 will feature double the number of publicly-submitted entries as the 2021 edition.

Portugal has confirmed their participation in Eurovision 2022, following their first qualification since 2017. RTP confirmed the news earlier this week when it opened applications for the Festival da Canção 2022, which will have twice as many slots for public submissions as this year's edition.

RTP, the Portuguese national broadcaster, has confirmed their participation in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest by releasing the criteria for the 56th Festival da Canço. Perhaps most noticeably, the broadcaster has increased the amount of spots available for public contributions in the lineup from two in 2021 to four in 2022.

Aside from that, the format will be similar to that of this year's version. There will be a total of 20 entries, with 16 of them coming from composers who have been directly invited by RTP. There will be two semi-finals, with five songs from each semi-final qualifying. The Grand Final will feature ten competing entries, with the winner selected by a 50/50 split between televoting and jury voting.

Elisa won Festival do Canço 2020 last year with her song "Medo de Sentir." Unfortunately, because to the epidemic, she did not have the opportunity to represent her country at Eurovision. After Eurovision 2021 was canceled, RTP said that Festival da Canço 2021 would go on.

Elisa went on to perform as a guest at the festival and was Portugal's ambassador for the Grand Final despite not being internally selected. With "Love Is On My Side," the Black Mamba won the 2021 edition of Festival da Canço, marking Portugal's first English-language submission in the competition in 52 years. The band broke Portugal's non-qualification streak in Rotterdam, finishing 12th with 153 points.
