Batman: The Knight introduces a new Batman origin

Bruce Wayne gets a new Batman Begins style origin in Batman: The Knight

Despite Warner Bros.' plans for a new onscreen version of the Caped Crusader in The Batman, DC is resurrecting the 2005 film Batman Begins for a new 10-issue series titled Batman: The Knight, written by Chip Zdarsky and illustrated by Carmine Di Giandomenico.

In comic books, Batman's origins aren't exactly fresh territory for DC. From his route to becoming Batman to his first cases in Gotham City, Batman: Year One, Batman: Zero Year, and other high-profile stories have addressed various facets of Batman's early exploits. But Batman: The Knight goes a step further, depicting the period between when Bruce Wayne fled Gotham as a young man and when he returned to his hometown to become a crimefighter.

Those who have seen Batman Begins will recognize the plot premise and associated graphics immediately away. For those who are more familiar with Batman's comic book history, it appears that the goal of Batman: The Knight is to provide a concise picture of how Bruce Wayne trained to become Batman, incorporating various aspects of the story previously told in comics and presenting them through a familiar lens.

And, should anyone believe we're going too far with this, DC is completely embracing the Batman Begins film analogy in the advance solicitation material for Batman: The Knight #1, which asks cryptically, "How did the Dark Knight...begin?"

Batman: The Knight, according to DC, will be a "definitive" look at Bruce Wayne's preparation for the role of Batman. Simultaneously, Detective Comics is preparing a major story from writer Mark Waid and illustrator Dan Mora that reunites the 'World's Finest' buddies Batman and Superman, implying that vintage Batman nostalgia will be all over DC starting in January.
