The gaming genres that we enjoy today are all products of what came before us. People who worked hard day and night to produce a new interactive form of entertainment, one that can not only be watched on a screen, but one where you can drive the protagonist towards the end goal that they are intended to go.

And in this list, we can see and appreciate where today’s gaming genres originated and how those games are revived to be enjoyed in today’s gaming standards.

Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA):

The Multiplayer Online Battle Arena genre, also known as MOBA, took the attention of gamers worldwide by storm. The genre started as a bonus game mod made by IceFrog for Warcraft III called Defense of the Ancients or DotA, and ended up becoming a smash hit much larger than Warcraft itself.

The seemingly powerful impact that the game mod provided paved the way to many games like it, games like Smite, Heroes of Newerth and League of Legends adapted the three lane tower defense like game with their own original heroes and original twists. The booming popularity of DotA’s game design was so huge that it made its own genre and gave birth to today’s MOBA.

First Person Shooter (FPS):

Every gamer knows one of the most famous gaming genre out there called First Person Shooting or FPS. Many story based and online multiplayer games adapts the FPS genre and there are no gamers out there that have not been exposed to FPS for it’s the most common genre you can find in many games, but where did First Person Shooter came from?

The first ever FPS game can be found all the way back in the year 1992 called Wolfenstein 3D developed by id Software. The game adapted the genre’s basic archetype yet another game that came out a year after Wolfenstein’s release made the genre famous and led it to where it is now.

Doom, developed by the same company id Software is a game about a soldier fighting off demons in mars. The game’s story and camera perspective (which was very new in the gaming industry) led the game to a sky rocketing success making the FPS genre known by the gaming industry all over the world.

Doom was so successful that the FPS genre’s name was first called Doom Copies because every gamer back then found that the FPS genre was Doom’s iconic property.

Battle Royale (BR):

The fairly new but incredibly famous genre called BR also known as Battle Royale is another gaming genre that is beloved by gamers worldwide. The genre consists of elements like last man survival, scavenging and area shrinking.

The genre’s name came from the Japanese movie in the year 2000 called Battle Royale, which implicates the same elements that the gaming genre has, scavenging and last man survival. The first application of the genre was dated back around 2012, shortly after the release of the movie The Hunger Games, a minecraft mod was made which applied the rules and settings of a Battle Royale genre. Day Z was another mod from the game Arma 2 that paved the way to the genre of Battle Royale we know today.

From there, the genre grew and the game Playerunknown's BattleGrounds also known as P.U.B.G came into existence and took the gaming industry by storm and became one of the most famous Battle Royale gaming genre that also paved the way for more games like Fortnite, BattleField and Call of Duty to approach the genre and made many gamers more reason to love gaming.
