Styles confessed to the real meaning behind "Watermelon Sugar"

Does the song have a sexual connotation like what everyone believes?

The 27-year-old pop musician revealed a common conception about the meaning of his smash song "Watermelon Sugar" while playing onstage in Nashville, Tenn. on Friday, Oct. 1.

This song is about..." Styles began. "It doesn't really matter what it's about." He continued, "It's about, uh, the sweetness of life." Before ultimately conceding, he had the audience sing a few lines with him. "It's also about the female orgasm but that's totally different, it's not really relevant," causing the audience to explode in applause.

"Watermelon Sugar," originally released in November 2019, includes the lyrics, "I just wanna taste it, I just wanna taste it / Watermelon sugar high" and "Tastes like strawberries / On a summer evenin' / And it sounds just like a song / I want your belly / And that summer feelin' / I don't know if I could ever go without."

Don't worry if you never associated "Watermelon Sugar" with any sexual connotations. While many fans' heads immediately went in one direction when they heard the song (or saw the sultry music video—which the singer dedicated to "touching"), others have dismissed the notion that it was about oral sex. Katherine Heigl, who used to listen to the song with her kids, thought it was about "watermelons and sweetness."

Styles remained cautious in a 2019 interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe when asked if "Watermelon Sugar" was about "the delights of mutually acknowledged oral pleasure."

"Is that all there is to it?" The singer responded with a smile. "I'm not sure."
