One of the best things about Destiny 2's real-time service mode is that it allows Bungie to really explore the depth of the season's story, allowing the game to reach new heights in terms of character development and plot development. One of the best characters in this model is Raven, as he is introduced as a newly resurrected Guardian who happens to be his former life as Uldren Sov, so many of the game's characters naturally hate what he doesn't have really. These include killing Destiny 2's Cayde-6, the beloved Hunter Vanguard, all the way back to the Forsaken expansion, which left Hunters unrepresented. Players can prepare enough Destiny 2 Silver in the game.

For a long time, there has been community-wide debate about whether Crow will be Destiny 2's new Hunter Vanguard, or perhaps other characters will step in to take Cayde's place before the Light and Darkness saga ends, but the recent The Final Shape trailer muddies the waters around that theme. On the one hand, Crow becoming Hunter Vanguard would make sense as a way to honor Cayde's Vanguard Dare, even though he wasn't technically the one who murdered Exo in the first place. Cayde-6, on the other hand, is now back.

Destiny 2's possible solution to the Hunter Vanguard Cayde vs. Crow conundrum

Based on the leaks of Destiny 2's final form, Cayde-6 could be nothing more than a sort of guide for the players in the valley on the other side of the portal opened by The Witness during the events of the Lightfall campaign. If this is the case, then the character will likely indeed play a role in the campaign events, perhaps as a vendor like other destination-specific NPCs in the game's history, such as Fynch in The Witch Queen and Nimbus in Lightfall. this is still Cayde-6 justice, but it may not be what some fans are expecting.

Also, Cayde's return doesn't necessarily mean he'll be able to actually leave the Valley of Time and visit places like the High Tower. He still wouldn't really be able to return as the all-powerful leader of the Hunters in that scenario, and his presence in the Final Form expansion pack may actually be a byproduct of the collapse of space and/or time, as the death of Caid-6's Final Forsaken occurs after his ghost Sundance is shot by one of Orton's barons. Thus, according to what is known about Destiny 2 lore, he will not be able to return.

Nonetheless, the fact that Cayde-6 will appear in the next sourcebook still leaves the question of what will happen to the Hunter Vanguard character. If Cayde can't actually play the character again, which should be acknowledged, it could be that some conversation took place between Exo and Crow that led to the latter accepting the burden of Uldren's past life as he did during the haunted season, but this time pointing in the direction of a clear character. If Cayde-6 forgave Crow in Destiny 2's The Final Shape, then this could be the turning point he needs to take over from the former.

Destiny 2 is at a crossroads, considering that The Final Shape is likely to be a fairly large expansion pack that already needs to address several issues, making it unlikely that other characters will be involved in the process. It could allow characters to discuss what will happen to the Hunter Vanguard character and possibly move pieces in a way that happens sooner rather than later, or it could drop that particular part while still providing character growth in other areas.
