Chicago-based United Airlines To Add 5 New Transatlantic Flights

The airline company is also looking to further European destinations.

United Airlines, based in Chicago, is launching five new transatlantic routes in Spring 2022 as it prepares for a possible rebound in summer travel between the United States and Europe next year.

The company's greatest transatlantic expansion in history would include locations in Spain, Portugal, Norway, the Spanish Canary Islands, and Jordan.

Patrick Quayle, senior vice president of international network and partnerships at United, stated in a press statement last Thursday that given the company's high expectations for summer travel to Europe, now is the time to use their exceptional global network in new and innovative ways.

United will be the first airline in North America to travel to the five new locations.

  • Bergen, Norway: Beginning May 20, United will operate three flights each week on a Boeing 757-200 between New York/Newark and Bergen.
  • Azores, Portugal: Flights between New York/Newark and Ponta Delgada, Azores, will commence on May 13 using a new Boeing 737 MAX 8. Along with flights to Porto (which begin in March) and Lisbon, this will be United's third Portuguese destination (which is being operated from New York and is set to resume from Washington, D.C. next summer).
  • Palma de Mallorca, Spain:  Beginning June 2, passengers can fly aboard a Boeing 767-300ER from New York/Newark to the seaside resort in the Balearic Islands. United will operate three flights every week.
  • Tenerife in the Spanish Canary Islands: On June 9, United will begin a new route from New York/Newark to Tenerife, operating service three times each week on a Boeing 757-200.
  • Amman, Jordan: Flights from Washington, D.C. to Amman will commence on May 5 with three-times-weekly service on a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

In addition, the airline is adding new flights to five European destinations (Berlin, Dublin, Milan, Munich, and Rome) "in anticipation of a resurgence in visitors," as well as resuming seven routes that were halted during the pandemic to Bangalore, Frankfurt, Tokyo's Haneda Airport, Nice, and Zurich, all of which are subject to government approval.
