HBO’s The Last of Us series has leaked new photos online

New photographs from The Last of Us series' Canadian set give us our finest look yet at Pedro Pascal's Joel and Bella Ramsey's Ellie

Sony's live-action adaptation of The Last of Us series, which was originally slated to be a film, has been recast as an HBO series. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey star as the titular characters, who are attempting to survive a zombie apocalypse that has decimated America. The first season of the show is expected to be a direct adaptation of the first game, which was released in 2013 for the PlayStation 3.

The series is now filming in Edmonton, Canada, and will premiere later next year. While we got our first official look at Joel and Ellie a few weeks ago, the teaser image was lacking, just revealing the characters' backs as they stood over the debris. Set photographs from the series have now surfaced online, providing the best look yet at Pedro Pascal's battle-hardened and jaded Joel.

The original video game revolves around a smuggler named Joel and a 14-year-old girl named Ellie, the latter of whom may have the key to cure the fatal epidemic that ravaged the game's post-apocalyptic planet. Joel is hired to smuggle Ellie out of a quarantine zone, and as they fight to survive on their trek across the United States, he finds himself relying on the teenage girl just as much as she needs him. The first game will be covered in the HBO adaptation, with the second game perhaps surviving as the foundation for extra content. The new series is expected to be one of the most costly ever produced, with each episode costing over $10 million and a total budget of around $200 million.

The Last Of Us, an HBO film, does not yet have a premiere date, but it is expected to arrive in late 2022.
